Paladins
If there was ever a guy who'd end up with the Paladins, it's Dojima. He is lawful good to a fault, and desires only to protect people without thinking of his own gain. The Corsair's chaotic nature would drive him absolutely bonkers. He's big into maintaining order and working in systems set up to protect people. There is a desire inside him at times to take things into his own hands, especially when things get stressful or someone he loves is directly in danger, but over all he's a defender, and someone who lives to protect and serve others. Plus the idea of being a criminal is probably mortifying to him, he'd complain so much.
Really, he'd be protecting the seas and helping look after people doing research/conservation in and around the islands. Keeping the peace and keeping people safe is his reason to be, so I just don't see him fitting with the Corsair mentality well.
Also, can you imagine how funny it'll be for the Corsairs to drive him bonkers by riling him up? Comedy gold.

CHARACTER INFO
Character: Ryotaro Dojima
Canon: Persona 4 Golden (Post True Ending, Pre-Epilogue scene)
Age: 42
Background Information: Heartbreak, heartbreak/You tell me goodbye
Personality:
- Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Ryotaro Dojima is a police detective from the small Japanese town of Inaba. 'Hardboiled' a term thrown around to describe him, stoic also fitting the bill pretty well on most counts. He takes his job protecting the peace and solving crimes in the small rural town seriously, to the point he's something of a workaholic. Upon meeting him, someone may take his near permanent furrow of his brows as a sign he's a total hardass, unyeilding and uncompromising, and to a point, they're right. He does not suffer fools, and will call out idiocy or people slacking off when he sees them, especially his ex-junior partner when they worked together. He's got his vices that keeps him going, the amazing trio of cigarettes, coffee and alcohol that sometimes you can smell on his person, though he does try to go easier on the last one nowadays.
That hardassness is only part of him, of course. Another part is an awkward tenderness of a man who never learned how to easily express his compassionate nature, so it comes out in fits and starts of someone trying and fumbling his way, especially in regards to his young daughter and nephew. Unlike some people in Inaba, he's not one prone to believing gossip and rumours, and will try to help people in subtle ways. Recognizing the local delinquent's good intentions in his rough and tumble antics and defending a young detective's skills despite her youth, its clear he firmly believes in giving people second chances.
- What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc? AND What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
The most important thing about Ryotaro Dojima is that he wants to protect those he cares about. That is literally his raison d'etre-- the urge, the desire, the absolute need he has to protect Nanako, Souji, his family and the town of Inaba.
The reason I put both questions together is how deeply that drive is both his raison d'etre and his near fatal flaw, because within the story of Persona 4 Golden, he fails before the story even begins. Dojima's wife, Chisato, died during a hit and run on a foggy day while she was going to pick up Nanako from daycare, where no one saw what happened or found her body till hours afterwards. Not only could he not prevent the death of his beloved wife, but he couldn't even find the culprit and 'catch the bad guy' to show his daughter he would keep her safe too. In his mind, he is a failure as a man, husband, father and detective.
And this failure leads into a lot of the family issues you deal with in Dojima's social link (side story), helping him realize being there for his daughter as a father is what he needs to do, that obsessing over trying to solve the crime was just him running away from her.
Another flaw he has is his pragmatism and no nonsense nature makes him unwilling/unable to follow more outside the box thinking that fellow Detective Naoto Shirogane can do. He just doesn't do supernatural stuff that can't be explained with science or logic well. Which of course is why it's hilarious to send him into a world where magic is totally a thing!
Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
Dojima doesn't like sweet foods! He perfers bitter (coffee) or savory/umami (gyoza, sushi).
He used run track in highschool and actually was their star runner.
He gave Adachi his tie that he wears.
Abilities & Inventory:
Dojima is a total normie with no supernatural powers whatsoever. He does have police training, which includes martial arts/close quarter combat and disarmament, as well as being a fast runner and skills with shooting and caring for firearms, namely his service pistol. Otherwise, a totally normal human!
Inventory would include:
Pack of cigarettes
Wallet
Service Pistol
Handcuffs

Character: Ryotaro Dojima
Canon: Persona 4 Golden, Post Game (before Golden ending Epilogue), Forgotten Tales CRAU
Age: 41 + 2 years Soul time in the Index
Background Information:
Canon History: Link Ryotaro Dojima is a forty-one year old lead detective in a quiet, not quite rural town of Inaba. The tall, broad shouldered man with brown hair, grey eyes, and constant three day stubble is still coming to terms with the death of his wife in an unsolved hit and run several years before. He struggles to be a single parent to his 6 year old daughter, Nanako, both because of her resemblance to his dead wife, his feelings of inadequacy of connecting with her, and the fact that he still has yet to solve her mother’s murder. Due to the strain, he throws himself into his job, often coming home very late, scared to face her. This strained relationship comes to a head when his 16 year old nephew comes to stay with them, and a string of horrific murders and kidnappings begin happening in Inaba. In the year his nephew comes to stay with him, Dojima begins to come to terms with his feelings of inadequacy due to his failings as a parent and his frustrations at his inability to solve these terrible crimes in his hometown. While he has a hard time believing it, he suspects there is something unnatural about the kidnappings, refusing to give up on them, despite the rest of the police force closing the case after the arrest of a suspect. When he discovers his nephew was involved somehow, Dojima ends up seriously injured chasing after a suspect who had chosen Nanako as his latest victim. Despite nearly losing his daughter in the process, Dojima entrusts his nephew to track down the true culprit: his subordinate Tohru Adachi, who had manipulating everyone for his amusement.
After both he and his daughter are released from the hospital, Dojima vows to better balance his work and home life, with his daughter’s blessing. Though told the true story of the murders being orchestrated by a vengeful demon controlling another dimension behind the screens of tvs, his pragmatic nature struggles to believe such a wild tale, though he knows there is something unnatural about the case.
Forgotten Tales: Dojima’s time in the Index allowed him a good deal of personal growth; both in powers and his actual self. Finally having something akin to ‘super powers’, unlike his normal Inaba self, he overexerted himself at first, obsessing with stopping any danger and protecting everyone, getting himself hurt by Hyde during a fight in the Little Mermaid story before basically being scolded into taking care of himself better. He was able to develop adult friends (gasp!) and ended up dad’ing a few of the younger characters despite himself/without his real notice. Eventually thanks to dealing with some… good but not so straight and narrow folks in his friend group he started to shift from Lawful Good to Neutral Good, willing to give a bit more wiggle room and have patience for more dubious people in his area. Finally dealing with Adachi head on and basically beating the shit out of him after everything he did in Inaba lead to them sort of… dealing? With their issues? He also developed something of a ...relationship? Connection?friends with benefits??? with Naomi Kimishimi which is pretty significant due to his widower status back in Inaba.
Personality: 'Hard boiled', 'Stoic', 'Rough around the edges' can all be words to describe Dojima. He's a honest, hard working man who's not afraid to get his hands dirty in his investigations, but is definitely a workaholic. He doesn't suffer fools, and is more than willing to smack his junior partner, Adachi, in the back of the head if he's being a dumbass, as well as lecture Souji and Yosuke for their own stupidity during the investigation. He's intelligent (though not quite to Naoto Shirogane's absurd levels) and has good detective intuition, but ironically his pragmatism and emotions can sometimes blind him in more abnormal investigations. Speaking of emotions...
"Kind hearted", "Well meaning", "As emotionally intelligent as a brick" can ALSO describe Dojima as well. He truly does care about the people of Inaba, his family and his co-workers, but often times fumbles on actually expressing that properly, especially with Nanako and Souji. He tries, by god he tries, and he's gotten better, but he still stumbles with how to say what he's feeling or figure out what his little girl emotionally needs. Before and during Persona 4's timeline he had been obsessed with finding his wife's killer to the point of being neglectful to Nanako, but thanks to Souji's help has really learned what being a 'family' means, and that he wants to protect Inaba as both a detective and a father.
Thanks to the dreamworld, though, he might not have a choice in expressing how he’s feeling...
Abilities & Inventory: Dojima is a perfectly normal human, so no super human strength, ninja powers or persona abilities apply. He’s a trained police officer and is able to use a revolver and Taiho-jutsu (or arresting technique martial arts) and some Judo and Kendo as required by the Japanese Police. Thanks to Forgotten Tales he’s also become quite experienced with fighting with a broadsword (thanks Rokurou!). Whenever he starts working on his Dreamotion powers, he'll probably either end up developing something similar to Persona or some of his King Arthur powers, he's not exactly the most creative type.
Inventory:
His Police Revolver, cellphone (with no charge/signal), a small carton of cigarettes and his wallet.
Suitability & Plans: I would like to play Dojima as both a continuation of his Forgotten Tales development which I’ve very much enjoyed and just to continue to see how he grows. I want him to be able to continue to open up to others about what he’s dealt with, develop his skills and let him explore both dreamotion and taking on a dream form. I also really enjoyed the CR he developed, even in just the test drive and want to see where else it will take him! He’s a pretty independent guy, not really needing cast members to progress or have fun with, which gives a lot of flexibility for such a stick in the mud guy. I’m pretty good about making my own fun or finding things to do, so it shouldn’t be difficult to throw Dojima into scenarios for the fun of it! He’s a great straight man to wacky hijinks, which is really great to play with.also if Nanako is here, c’mon, I gotta

At the start, the sword will only be able to glow with power (like a glowstick!), but over time he’ll gain access to it’s more magical abilities, including energy attacks (A la Fate/stay and/or Fate/GO). He will also be able to summon phantasmal representations of the Knights of the Round Table to aid in fighting. At first, he’ll only be able to summon one Knight, but eventually he’ll be able to summon the full Table as he gains more powers/upgrades. |
